Beszélgetés | Dialog | Dialogue: Caravaggio. Paysage inconnu

HU__________________________________________________________________

Caravaggióról: a művészettörténet első performere. A saját korának Maleviche.

a szóban forgó előadásban a két fantasztikus zeneszerző hangja a szemünk láttára formálja át a színészeket

If I said the room was jam packed, it had been an exaggeration, but there were a lot of participants at the discussion Tuesday morning, it’s a fact. After two interesting, questioning performances, the public interest was high.

Caravaggio Terminal
What we found out…

About the images: the paintings were not the main interest of the creator, this is why these never explicitly appeared on the scene. More likely, the answers given to the paintings should be sought in the performance. The selection of the paintings happened on the basis of how important they were in Caravaggio’s life, and how they can be related to the real people influencing them.

About the background projection and the sounds: Robert Woodruff’s request was to invite two young artists to join the production, who are not part of the theatrical institution, who are outsiders and who probably couldn’t live in it. Somewhat Caravaggio-like. Bányász Bertalan VJ and bodoki halmen kata performer, musician, who, besides the two songs played also contributed to the creation of the soundtrack.

About the space: Carmencita’s platform in the creation of the space was the word terminal from the title. She arrived to the last station of the human bodies from here, to the morgue, where everybody is naked, and they have nothing to expect from life. A starting point to creating a new life, the way it figures in our memories.

About Caravaggio: the first performer in art history. The Malevich of his age.

About the Western world: when museum routes are created in a chapel, when guards lead you through it, the ideas of the creator are lost, we cannot sense anything from the spirit of the age as visitors. András Visky pointed this out, he is afraid of the over-musealisation. The performance tried to avoid this.

Paysage inconnu
What we found out…

From Gábor Tompa: that the presence of Maria Constantinescu at this festival is satisfying, because it means that the festival is valuable and interesting.

From Maria Constantinescu:
that Tompa’s assumption is right, Interferences is indeed outstanding, it has a unique identity on the crowded palette of Romanian theatrical festivals.
how her first meeting with József Nagy’s artwork was, in Avignon, at open-air performances, in pouring rain, sympathizing with the actors.
that Nagy’s artwork was about the indefatigable searcher, the restless artist analysing the human unknown, about  the power hiding in the moment of grasping the creation.
that in the performance, the tones of two amazing composers transmogrify the actors at our sight.

From József Nagy:
that the set, choreographed parts of Paysage Inconnu wouldn’t last a minute (both the music and the motion)
that he evoked two other actors, he later changed it, this is how the two friends have turned into faceless proto-twins.
that the path of the two friends – even if „they didn’t really utter this”: is a Danse Macabre, they move on in the zone between life and death, being and non-existence.
that he has accepted his fellow creators into the personal word that fuels his art after long years of hard work and loyalty.

From András Visky: that the key to József Nagy’s theatre which he’s just recently found is that there is always something concrete behind the abstract scenic forms, in this case, he can clearly see the panorama of Kanizsa, the real artist friends, the axe cutting into the lyric scenery.

Szavak helyett a testek beszéltek, a zene, a hang, a fény, a sötét.

A testek mozdulatainak szavakkal való megragadása olyan, mintha szeretkezés helyett beszélgetnénk. Hol simogatta a bőrt, hol belevájt a húsba.

Figyeltem és megfeledkeztem magamról.
A tekintetemmel éber voltam.

Când le-a mângâiat, când le-a rănit carnea vie.

Lately I’ve been unspeakably wishing for an occasion, when going to the theatre wouldn’t just show the same script behind the performance: casting, scenario, round/cubic table, talk-over, reading, memorizing, then fitting the scenery. Sadly, I’ve met a lot of performances that left this sour taste in my mouth. I’ve been wishing for dessert.

Tonight’s performance directed by József Nagy left the text-based theatre’s principle behind, and very probably the motions we’ve seen were not planned around a round table. Bodies spoke instead of words, the music, the sound, the light, the darkness. (To keep going: the fidgeting around me, the flash of cell phone lights barely enough to peek at the time, the heavy silence.)

Trying to put the motions of the body into words is like talking instead of making love. Paysage inconnu is extremely hard to put in sentences; it requires focused attention and composure. The short description of the performance saying that „it evokes the influence of nature” was completely unnecessary, if you hadn’t managed to open you inner eyes wide and read it. I was watching the bodies as they stretch and slacken, the faces without faces, the feet as they keep the flesh and the muscles together, and keep them in touch with the objects. The nuances of hugging, pushing away, suppressing, letting go, gripping, joys and sorrows appeared, but the dancers didn’t only flash these feeling of life, they condensed them into a thick essence of accumulated life wisdom. The life music was not merely accompaniment or background, but a third character, breathing together with the bodies. Sometimes, it stroked the skin, sometimes it cut into the flesh.

I’ve been watching, I completely forgot about myself.
My sight was aware. My soul was not.
It was cruel.

I got a dessert too big, I just stared at it and then smeared it all over my face.
