Ürügy: Aki elzárja az éjszakát
Nyelv: magyar-román-magyar
Létszám: fele plusz egy
C°: +5 / +21

Ezen kívül a fekete humort említi, amelyet szerinte a Max szájába adott, Heiner Müller Qvartettből kiragadott szövegek hordoznak.

Gergely Zsuzsa a hallgatóságból Nona Ciobanu felé intéz kérdést.

Pretext: Who Shuts the Night
Language: Hungarian – Romanian – Hungarian
Headcount: half plus one
C°: +5 / +21
Time: somewhere around the height of 11 o’clock. Or depth.
Style: prosaic
Performers: András Visky, Nona Ciobanu, Enikő Györgyjakab, Gábor Viola

According to Andrés Visky, we’ve seen a special performance. It raised the problem if public confession, the achieving of absolution, the chance of purification. The performance attracts our attention upon the fact of the soul that while forgiveness and absolution is not real, we are living in a devastating and pathological addiction in each other’s proximity.
In his interpretation, the performance is our way from addiction to freedom. During the performance, the big becomes small, the remote becomes adjacent.

Nona Ciobanu says that she first prepared this performance in Maribor with two local actors at request. She thought they’ve had a more rational approach with the actors from Maribor. Those layers of physicality that were reached here remained untouched during the other work. She also emphasized the outstanding energy of Enikő and Gábor.

Next, she told the story of the sung prayer from the performance. It was the real life prayer of a real Jewish man, who had asked the guards of the concentration camp to let him sing this prayer while digging their own grave along with 1600 others. The guards were unable to kill him after this, they let him go. The prayer we heard during the performance was the recording of the original sound from 1952.

After this, András Visky quizzed the director about the ending, proposing to interpret the final moment of dressing and sitting down as the characters accepting themselves through these gestures. This, though, was not an expectation, he added.

According to Nona Ciobanu, the ending is none other than undertaking death, and death itself. She also added that the two characters actually died in the movie (the performance is the adaptation of the film with the same title). The same thing happened here, but she didn’t want to be explicit about it, she wanted to leave the gate open to the interpreters.

András Visky asked her about humour, saying that it is known about people who had been part of this kind of disgrace that their humour appeared as being the only need and weapon for humanity.
Nona Ciobanu considered this layer of the performance as being the kind and innocent dialogue of the two characters about these horrific things. She also mentioned black humour, carried by the quotes from Heiner Müller Quartet, spoken by Max.

András Visky turned to the actors to talk about the strong, intimate presence. He didn’t think the actors had had any relax moments during the performance.
Enikő Györgyjakab mentioned physicality, she was glad that all three of them (the two actors and the director) were courageous enough. She knew the body of an actor had to be flexed, not to be afraid of knocks. On the other hand, sensibility was also an important part of the performance; it had to start in two directions. They had to be both strong and tender, keeping this balance was extremely important.
Gábor Viola spoke about possibilities that aren’t handed to every actor, but they are desired by all of them: the company is not your enemy, you don’t have to conquer your partner. The enemy is actually you.

Zsuzsa Gergely asked a question of Nona Ciobanu from the audience.
She thought the text didn’t manage to fit into the intimate atmosphere of the performance all the time. She saw the discrepancies in Max’s texts.

Nona Ciobanu returned the discussion to black humour and theatricality. She thought that Max needed the „comic relief” in the play, used against both himself and his victim. And since the original text was mostly just a pretext, every now and then the performance needed these political-philosophical passages where the present is unveiled.

Engem is odavághatna a falhoz, hagynám. A lefésült haja egy óra elteltével újra göndör lesz, egyre eltorzultabb mimikát használ, egyre jobban összeesik a teste.
Szép pillanatokat teremtenek, amikor egymás szemébe néznek, amikor egymáshoz érnek, amikor bántalmazzák egymást – habzsolom a látványt.

A complicated love story only needs two actors, a wounded woman and a wounded man, whose relationship started with rape.

A complicated love story only needs to dig in the deepest layers of the past, step by step, like descending to the cellar, where there is no light, our heart is racing as we try to feel the next step out with our bodies. We are afraid, we don’t know what we might knock into.

A complicated love story only needs a shared burden, like the memory, the weight and the pain of the death camp, an imprisoned existence and living in the past.

A complicated love story only needs the constant alteration of the role of the victim and the oppressor, there are no rules, the stronger stands. The one with the stronger presence squelches the other, the one with a more disciplined body-consciousness pushes the other to the ground. The weaker one cries. The stronger one cries.

The pain of this performance touched me when I realized that behind the vast acting work there is no clear, deliberate directing concept. There is a complicated love story and two great actors, who pour their soul out on the stage.
There is Enikő Györgyjakab, I can see the fragility behind her flexing muscles. I can see her honest smile, her incredible body consciousness and her whacking energy.
There is Gábor Viola, the mangodanimal. He trusses and thrusts. He could thrust me against the wall, I would let him. His smarmed hair becomes curly again after an hour, his mimicry is more distorted, his body, collapsed.
They create beautiful moments when looking into each other’s eyes, when they touch each other, when they hurt each other – I enjoy the sight.

And still.
The story, the dramaturgy, the text, the scene, the director’s vision don’t ensure a strong background for the couple’s energy and intensity.

Or at least I should have a hint about this vision... sadly, the performance fell into pieces in front of me. And it couldn’t be put back together.
